Hello! Welcome to my website that has been in the works for about a year. I have been inspired and was not sure how to begin or if I would take to blogging. However, despite many fears, I feel that bringing my voice could inspire other young professionals as they enter the world of academia and medicine.
Let me first introduce myself, my name is Samantha Rose and I am currently a graduate student at Missouri State University pursing my Masters degree in History. I graduated from UCLA in 2018 with my Bachelors degree and double majored in Ancient Near East & Egyptology and Anthropology. My career goals include teaching Egyptology, anthropology, and history courses at my local community colleges while also practicing as a Physician Assistant (PA). After the completion of my Masters in History, I will tackle the remaining prerequisite courses to apply to PA schools.
I am not only a graduate student, but I am a partner, daughter, sister, and cat mom. Since a very early age I have been interested in science, medicine, and history. During my undergraduate years at UCLA, I was always looking for ways to combine the humanities with medicine. It was not until my senior year in the Spring Quarter where I met with the Dean of the Humanities Department at UCLA and he told me there is a new emerging field of Medical Humanities. I had heard of Medical Anthropology and also contemplated going to medical school to pursue an MD/ PhD in the social sciences, but while I explored these areas of interest nothing seemed quite right. I want to create my own path and there is nothing wrong with finding your own way.
I wanted to create a platform because I have seen both during my high school to undergraduate to graduate studies that women, minorities, and those with interests like mine are incredibly underrepresented in both academia and medicine. As I have and continue to navigate these waters, I wanted to share my experience. So thank you for reading and joining me as I explore the worlds of academia and medicine.
